Rotterdam, the Netherlands – BYD, the world''s leading manufacturer of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) and power batteries, has been at the forefront of battery technology for over 27 years.
The gravimetric energy density of the cell is given as 185 Wh/kg, the volumetric energy density as 430 Wh/l. A Short Blade cell is 21.5 millimetres thick, 118 millimetres wide and 574 millimetres long. For comparison: BYD''s blade battery is the same width, slightly flatter but 905 millimetres long.
This means that with the same weight and size, Blade Battery can support longer driving ranges. BYD also anticipates that its battery''s energy density would exceed 180Wh/kg in 2025. However, BYD has a production capacity shortage of its Blade Battery. The company cannot fulfill its demand for equipment for its own new car models at present.
BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed development of the new battery during a recent financial report communication meeting. Wang Chuanfu said that the second-generation blade battery will have a smaller size and lighter weight for the same endurance, and that power consumption will be reduced per 100 kilometers.
Current and future lithium-ion battery manufacturing
Although the BYD battery is showing some significant improvements, CATL''s new MP3 battery, which will go into production this year, may up the stakes. CATL says the M3P battery which is based on new materials technology, will have a greater energy density and perform better than its lithium-ion phosphate batteries.
